- Network marketing opportunities are a dime a dozen, as the expression goes. And when you look at how few network marketers actually make money, most of them are either junk, or they don’t suit your personality. Finding the right opportunity involves looking at a number of factors:
- A product that will sell itself. Many MLM opportunities are about over-priced products. That is how some companies can afford to pay those incredibly high commissions. As long as everything is going well, your recruits don’t mind paying extra – because they are making commissions. But when they struggle to make sales or to recruit other people, they start to question the price of the products they have to buy, and stop making their monthly purchases. And YOU are back to square one. If, however, you pick an opportunity that comes with great products at good prices, many recruits will hang on for longer, because they feel they are getting value for their money.
- A payment (and referral-) plan that works for you. Not everybody feels comfortable with every type of payment plan. Some people like break-away payment plans, while others feel more comfortable in a binary, or a plain tiered referral structure. Some people like programs where you can place referrals where you want to in your matrix – and some people don’t (just ask anyone who had a useless referral pushed into their downlines by their upline – requiring them to work much harder to grow that line).
- A company that has their stuff sorted out – many MLM companies have messy logistics management, and sometimes they have messy money management. Both of these can cause you to lose referrals (purchases not delivered on time, or commissions not paid on time).

In the old days, you could simply join an MLM opportunity, and start running with it. You could make money. But nowadays the competition is a bit more, and a bit tougher.
On the other hand, though, the internet allows you to reach out to people in other towns, provinces, countries, and even people on other continents. However, once you start recruiting internationally, you will also compete internationally. That means you absolutely have to have a system which not only gives you the best chance of recruiting anyone you connect with, but which will also work for your referrals.

While the right team is a great place to be in, you can never underestimate the value of a sponsor who truly cares about you. A good sponsor will take the time to ensure you know everything you need to know about how the company operates, and about the basics of MLM and direct selling.
Think about it logically: Your sponsor wants to make money (commissions) from your efforts. The more successful YOU become, the more money he or she stands to make. Not all network marketers understand this, so it is quite possible to join under someone who doesn’t care about you.
Do some homework, and go and see what other people are saying about the person you want to join under. What kind of person is he or she? Keep in mind that while having a successful sponsor with experience is a good thing, it is not a guarantee that he or she will be there when you need them.

- The world is always changing. People are always finding newer and better ways of doing things – also in MLM.
