mlm lead generationMLM lead generation is the lifeblood of your network marketing business. Inexperienced marketers often get it wrong, and then become despondent when they don’t see results.

The harsh reality of any MLM business is that you need as many people as possible to consider your offer. A percentage of the people who view, read or listen to your offer will join your downline (the percentage depends on many things, such as your level of skill and experience, your personality, whether you are going after prospects that suit your capabilities, etc – but that is a completely different topic which we will cover some other time).

Let’s take a look at these…

Two MLM Lead Generation Methods

MLM lead generation can be either active or passive. Your personality will determine which of these you will be better at. However, if it is at all possible, I would recommend that you develop the skill sets required to do both. Even if you are much better at one than the other, the mere fact that you are able to work both ways will open up new opportunities for you to reach and recruit more people.

Active MLM lead generation revolves around prospecting. It is about calling potential recruits on the phone, meeting up with people, having conversations on Skype, and reaching out to people on social networks like Facebook.

The nice thing about active methods is that you have a measure of control over it. You know exactly how many people you want to reach, so you can simply keep working until you hit your number for the day or week.

Once again, you don’t control how many recruits you will get, but once you know how many people you have to talk to before you get a signup (on average), you can set your goals and daily commitments, and simply keep working with reasonably predictable results.

The downside of it is that you have to be able to face rejection, and that you need some basic interpersonal skills. This can be acquired, though.

Many people don’t feel comfortable doing this, but then again the people who make the real money are those who are willing to step out of their comfort zones.

Passive MLM lead generation revolves around marketing. This involves techniques like blogging, putting up videos, writing articles, doing webinars, etc. It is all about attracting people to you through what you offer them.

So what do you offer them?


For everything that you had to learn, or even don’t know yet, there are a multitude of people out there who struggle with the same question. Go and explore the network marketing forums and social groups to see which types of questions people ask.

If you don’t know the answers, go and find them. Educate yourself and then share what you have learnt. The internet is an amazing place – if you ask the right questions, you will eventually find the answers you want for free.

Besides the fact that you will grow as a network marketer in the process, solving problems for other people will make you “a credible source” of information and knowledge to them.

Once you solve a problem (answer a question) for someone, he or she tends to place less emphasis on your track record and brand credibility, and instead evaluate you according to what you just helped them with.

As long as you keep providing answers, you will keep attracting people with questions.

The upside of this is that any introvert (and even people with a low self esteem) can do it (except maybe the webinars part). Another upside to this approach is that all the content you put out, eventually accumulates, and eventually keeps sending you more and more prospects.

The downside is that it takes some time and effort to get it going – and as such it is best if you can combine active and passive MLM lead generation techniques. That way, you can immediately start seeing results, while your passive lead generation campaigns will slowly but surely keep growing.
